THE ESSENTIALS OF SUCCESSION PLANNING FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

Fostering a Continuity of Leadership to Mobilize Your Mission
A Signature Training Program offered by
The Third Sector Company, Inc.

Nearly two-thirds of nonprofit executives will be vacating their leadership positions within the next five years according to the national survey “Daring to Lead.” The expected attrition rates for board members and senior professional team members closely
aligns with these numbers; with chief development officers experiencing even higher attrition rates than their chief executives. Today, planning a continuity of leadership for nonprofits is as important as ever: Only 17% of nonprofits have a succession plan according to BoardSource, the nation’s recognized expert and information repository for nonprofit boards of directors.

Third Sector Company has been a recognized national leader in the creation of succession planning models and training programs for nonprofit organizations for over the past ten years. Participants will be challenged to look at leadership succession through five lenses ranging from planning for emergency transitions to succession planning policies and human resources practices to avoiding unnecessary attrition through retention strategies. The approach is viewing human capital development and deployment as important to a nonprofit’s sustainability as its care and attention to financial capital. The curricula was the result of experienced nonprofit leaders creating a training program each had wished was available when he or she was an executive director or board chair.
